My Child Doesn't Want To Brush. Help!

Posted on 1/15/2024 by Weo Admin
Dentist and child learn how to brush teethYou may think that your child is the only one around who doesn'tt want to brush their teeth, but in reality, one in every three children detests tooth brushing. In fact, many children would rather do just about anything than brush their teeth. If you are tired of griping at your children daily to brush their teeth, here are some tips you can use to encourage your children to brush their teeth.

Why Should I Worry About Kids Brushing Their Teeth?

Your ticket to lifelong dental health begins as a child. If your children practice good teeth brushing and flossing, even if they have only baby teeth to brush, they are more likely to have good dental health as adults. Research has shown that when children don't brush their teeth, their baby teeth will get cavities. If the cavities are severe or pervasive enough, it is possible that your child's permanent teeth may come in with cavities as well. They may also be discolored and stunted, or they may not come in at all. By getting your child into a routine for tooth brushing, you are helping them retain great dental health throughout their lives.

Tips for Tooth Brushing

If your child has issues with tooth brushing, here are some tips to help you get them into a brushing routine. First, let your child find a toothbrush they like. Many children love picking out their own toothbrushes because they can pick cartoon characters, princesses, or superheroes. Also, allow your child to pick their own toothpaste. Children's toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors, such as berry, bubble gum, cinnamon, or grape.

One of the best ways to establish a routine for your child to brush and floss is to do a brushing chart. Every time your child brushes or flosses, put a sticker on their chart. Once they reach their goal- perhaps if they brush and floss their teeth each day for two weeks, they can receive a little treat, such as a new toy car or a game. You can decide on the length of time for the award, as well as what the reward will be. With these simple steps, your child can develop a great brushing and flossing routine.
