Which Vitamins Are Important For Good Dental Health In Kids?

A group of kids smilingYour kids need vitamins and minerals to support their teeth and gums. It can be hard to know which vitamins are best to give children the best chance for great dental health. These are some vitamins and minerals kids need for their oral health, and what foods can provide them.

Calcium and Vitamin D

Both vitamin D and calcium are essential for your child's oral health. Both help teeth grow strong and durable. They also help the bones in your child's jaw grow strong and healthy. You can find calcium and vitamin D in several foods. If your children love dairy products, they are getting plenty of calcium and vitamin D. Your children can also eat broccoli, carrots, and fatty fish such as salmon.

Potassium

Like calcium, potassium increases the density of your bones. The stronger your child's teeth are, the less susceptible to cavities, chips, and cracks. Many fruits and vegetables have potassium, like bananas, avocados, potatoes, and prunes.

Phosphorous

Phosphorous is essential for tooth construction. Without phosphorous, your child's teeth will be soft and more prone to cavities. Teeth may not form properly as well. You can locate phosphorous in seafood, pork, beef, and cheese. If your child likes plant-based nutrition, you can find phosphorous in pumpkin seeds, soybeans, and lentils.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is critical to the health of your gums. In fact, passengers on journeys or explorations in the past would lose their teeth and have shrunken, pale, diseased gums from a lack of vitamin C. If you have heard of scurvy from old pirate movies, you know that the disease was caused by a lack of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps strengthen the blood flow in gums and helps keep gum tissue healthy. All citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, and you can also try leafy green vegetables and potatoes.
